                      Introduction to Academics at BRIGHTality

At BRIGHTality School, our academic programming is designed to foster communication skills across all content areas, emphasizing the essential practices of reading and writing within a broader educational context. We believe that effective communication is a cornerstone of education and personal development, vital for success in every discipline, from the humanities to the sciences.

To empower our students, we adopt a Choice Theory approach, allowing them to select their own learning pathways. This method not only encourages autonomy but also nurtures deeper engagement with material, as students pursue topics that resonate with their interests and aspirations.

Central to our educational philosophy is the understanding of Choice Theory principles, which emphasize the importance of meeting students' basic needs to enhance their learning experiences. By fostering a supportive and adaptive environment, we validate each student's voice, making them feel seen and heard.

This commitment to creating an inclusive space not only boosts confidence but also promotes active participation in the learning process.

As we implement our curriculum, the Vermont Proficiency Standards play a vital role in guiding our development and assessment strategies. By adhering to these benchmarks, we ensure that our students are not only achieving academic success but also acquiring the skills necessary to thrive in their future endeavors. In this way, our programming is designed to cultivate effective communicators who are prepared to navigate an increasingly complex world.

Our curriculum encompasses a diverse range of academic topics, including mathematics, social studies, science, art, and physical education, all while integrating communication skills. By offering a choice-driven learning environment, we ensure that students can explore their passions within various subjects, developing their ability to express ideas, articulate thoughts, and collaborate effectively with others. This holistic approach prepares students not only for academic success but also for meaningful participation in their communities and future endeavors.

Our curriculum aligns with the Vermont proficiency standards for middle school and grades 9-12, ensuring that our students meet the educational benchmarks necessary for success. These standards serve as a guiding framework, shaping our educational offerings and assessments. Proficiency is defined as the ability to demonstrate knowledge and skills in various areas of English language arts, science, mathematics, social studies, Vermont history, physical education, social-emotional education, and fine arts, which is crucial for students on their journey to becoming Vermont Graduates.
